BB1: Blumenbunker, House of Building Culture
Our design proposal is to convert a former Second World War air-raid shelter into a “House of Building Culture”. Through its location on Blumenstraße, near the Viktualienmarkt in Munich, a central and prestigious place is brought back to life.
The listed high-rise bunker on Blumenstraße dates from the Second World War. The floor plan of the building is square, with sides measuring about 14 metres. The six-storey building is enclosed by external walls up to 1.30 metres thick. The existing entrance, including its external staircase, and the pavilion roof will be removed completely. They will be replaced by a translucent structure that nestles against the existing volume. The modern structure forms the new entrance area as well as new access to the individual floors and serves as a second escape route. In addition, the modern extension allows for a generous, open exhibition space in the existing building. The part of the structure that projects above is used as a restaurant and offers a breathtaking view of the old town.
