MW1: Musicworld concert hall and music school in Fürth
Although the city of Fürth is an important location in the Nuremberg Metropolitan Region, it has no concert hall of its own, unlike other large cities. A new music school and two concert halls are to create a new cultural venue and meeting place for the catchment area on the River Pegnitz.
An architectural ensemble of four identical building complexes, which takes up the arrangement of the adjacent older houses as its theme, links the city centre and the city park. The row-like arrangement of the identical-looking older houses is implemented in the new building concept in a modern way and is thus the “modern counterpart” to the older stock. At an appropriate distance from the existing row, the new building is placed in a second row. This brings order to the city edge, which has so far not appeared uniform. The new ensemble extends the city edge and shifts it to the river as a naturally given boundary. The architectural concept provides for dividing the volume of the space programme into several houses. In keeping with the development structure, narrow, elongated cubes are created, oriented towards the river edge. Embedded in the topography, the ensemble initially presents a two-storey elevation at the entrance. Because of the slope towards the riverbank, four levels finally become visible. The ensemble ends with a free platform above the water on the bank of the Pegnitz, which can be used in a dual function, both as an outdoor stage and as a sun deck to linger on.
